Heart shaped pinkeep

Pinkeeps were used literally for keeping pins in the old days. It was one form of a pincushion. The decorated sides were made for example of wood or ivory and between the sides there was a band made of velvet where the pins where sticked. This way it was easy to carry the pins safely.

Nowadays pinkeeps are made mostly for decorative purposes. A pinkeep consists of two cardboards covered with fabric. Decorative pins are attached to the sides between the cardboards. Pinkeeps can be squares, circles, heart shaped... We made instructions to help in making a heart shaped pinkeep, but these instructions can be easily adapted to make a pinkeep of any shape. The principle is always the same.

The design in this pinkeep is a free design by The Gift of Stitching magazine. It is included in orders placed in Violarium. The Pearl head pins used in this design are manufactured by Bohin in France. The design was stitched on 30 count natural linen fabric, over two fabric threads with two strands of DMC 115.

Finishing instructions

Below you'll find instructions for finishing a heart shaped pinkeep. Please note, that it is prohibited to copy or download or distribute these photos or instructions without our permission. Of course you are welcome to share the link to these pages. If you have any questions about the instructions, please send us an e-mail and we will be happy to help.

1. Stitch a design you wish to use. You can stitch two designs, one for each side, or you can use matching cotton fabric on the reverse side.

2. Trace a pattern from your stitched design using tracing paper. This can be easily done for example against a window, this way the light from the window will help. Trace the pattern so that it is a bit bigger than your stitched design. Make sure that your pattern is symmetrical by folding it in half and correcting the possible irregularities.

3. Cut your pattern and use it to cut two pieces of cardboard and two pieces of wadding. Trim also your stitched design and the backing fabric, but remember to cut these at least 2 cm (almost 1") bigger than the pattern. This way you'll have enough fabric for finishing. Below you'll see all the pieces needed.

4. Glue or tape the wadding to the cardboard like in the photo below. Glue or tape the other piece of wadding to the other piece of cardboard.

5. Make small cuts to both fabrics (stitched piece and backing fabric), especially into the curved parts. This way the fabric will fit better into the cardboard. Be careful not to cut too deep so that you won't damage the front parts.

01

6. Place the backing fabric on the wadding and start lacing the fabric on the backside. If you wish, you can alternatively glue the fabric on the back to the cardboard. Lacing might be easier, because it's possible to adjust the fabric while lacing and it might be easier to center the fabrics. Tighten the fabric while lacing, so that it will take it's place neatly. Lace or glue the stitched design in the same way.

7. Now you have both fabric pieces laced or glued.

8. Sew these two pieces together (reverse sides inwards) with tiny stitches.

01

9. Sew a cord or ribbon of your choice around the pinkeep with few stitches. However, this is not necessary. If you wish you can also attach the cord instantly with pins. Pins will hold the cord in place.

01

10. Attach the pins by sticking them from the side in between the cardboards. Attach a bow to decorate the pinkeep.

01

11. Voila! It's finished.
